Calstar 6-day Red Rooster 3 Trip Report

Jackpot winners:  Larry Diamant 3rd, Kent Cope 2nd, Jerry Lagunzad 1st, Ken Abbs trolling JP
The Calstar sponsored 6-day trip on the Red Rooster 3 left the docks by noon on September 26, 2014.  Skipper Andy Cates assessed the current fishing conditions and made the call that we were going to do some traveling to execute his plan.  With a storm coming up from the south we were going straight to the top of The Ridge and then stay ahead of the storm by traveling north (opposite of what we normally do).  Calstar provided loaner Graphiter rods.  We loaned them out to the passengers, everyone received a Calstar t-shirt and we had a raffle where every passenger won a couple of prizes from the generous sponsors that support my trips.

We started fishing at the top of the Ridge looking for tuna and caught wahoo.  Oh well, no complaints there.  We did find the tuna and proceeded to catch our limits of tuna the first day.  So much for Andy's plan for fishing for tuna at the Ridge for 2 days.  At night we moved inside of the Ridge to target yellowtail.  We trolled for yellowtail and hooked wahoo.  Oh well again.  We did find the yellowtail.  We move up north that night (more like bounced up north) and we did completed our trip limits of yellowtail.  We move up north that night and fished kelp patties for dorado for our last day.  We caught trip limits of dorado and called it a trip.  The results was more than 30 wahoo and trip limits of yellowfin tuna, limits of yellowtail and limits of dorado.  That was some pretty good fishing.

The other thing that made this trip a success was the bonding and friendships that developed between the passengers and between the crew members, especially Arthur (AKA "Cheffie").  Thank you to Andy, Tom, Fernando, Brian, Nate on the deck and a big thanks to Chef Chapman and assistant "Cheffie" for the great food.  The bacon cheese burger (by request) was fantastic.  Thank you to Christina in the Red Rooster 3 office for getting us all booked, checked in, and on our way.  Thank you to Linda for being a fantastic owner, allowing us to have so much fun on Rooster.  I would also like to thank the sponsors that supported this trip for me.  Calstar for the loaner rods and t-shirts; Accurate Reels for the Extreme pliers;  Izorline for spectra, fluoro, mono;  Salas lures for surface and yoyo jigs; Baja Fish Gear for gift cards; BSI for Insta-flex connection glue; Swifty Mfg for the spectra washing system; Sportsman Seafood for the smoked fish, tuna jerky and discount coupons for fish processing; and Mustad hooks.

I hope to see all of you back on this trip next year and we should have room for anyone who wants to join in on this fun.  Just give Christina a call at the Red Rooster 3 office.

Thank you,
Gary Teraoka
